What are the health benefits (if any) to quitting drinking diet soda?

Caffeine and Health
Amanda Braciesewski asked:

I got into the habit of drinking large quantities of diet soda every day. I honestly drink about 12 cans a day and I can't imagine that's healthy for me, even if only for the amount of caffeine alone!

Anyway, I want to quit and switch to sipping water throughout the day. I know that would be healthier. What are some of the negative effects on your body from drinking diet soda that you can tell me that will help me quit drinking it?

Or, are there really no negative health effect to diet soda, in which case I have no reason to quit?

Thank you all for your input!

Most diet sodas are high in sodium which can lead to high blood pressure. Also a recent study found that there is a direct correlation between drinking diet soda and obesity….leading scientist to believe that diet soda makes you fat.
